Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Ruth Forman Garrett, age 85 of Gadsden, will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Garrard officiating. Burial will follow at Forrest Cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Ruth passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Gadsden Health & Rehab. She was born on December 26, 1937 in Gadsden to James Edwards Forman and Nannie Ruth Brown Forman. She was a lifelong resident of Gadsden except when she lived away with her military husband. She was a member of the 1956 graduating class of Gadsden High school and a member of Cherry Street Baptist Church.
Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her parents, James Edwards Forman and Nannie Ruth Brown Forman, her husband, Bobby Gene Garrett, her very special granddaughter, Michaela Thomas, her cousin/best friend, Marie Forman, her longtime companion, Gerald Bailey and her beloved pet, Benji.
She is survived by her children, Jeanna Jackson (Dennis) and Foster “Toby” F. Garrett (Donna) , both of Gadsden, Pellie Thomas (Mike) of York, NE, Charlie Garrett (Jennifer) of Melrose, NM, her grandsons, Jason Jackson and the mother of his children, Amy Jackson, Jeremy Jackson (Amanda), James Emmett Garrett (Renee), Bobby Kyle Jackson (fiancé Christina Ogles), David Thomas (Kristen), Jonathan Garrett, Jacob Garrett (Katrina), James Garrett (Leah), Jonathan Horton (Angie), Kim Owens (Todd), many precious great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and extended family. She is also survived by chosen daughters and special friends, Teresa Greer and Judy Spurlock.
Mrs. Garrett worked many years as a legal secretary and later as a paralegal having graduated with honors from the National Center for Paralegal training in Atlanta, GA. She was a charter member of the Gadsden Legal Secretaries Association having served several terms as President. She was also a member of the Alabama Association of Legal Secretaries serving as Vice President, President and National Director. She was retired from the McCain Law Firm. She was especially proud of her service to the paralegal advisory council at Gadsden State Community College.
The following persons have been asked to be pallbearers: Jason Jackson, Jeremy Jackson, James Emmett Garrett, Bobby Jackson, Mitch Bailey, Andrew Owens and Justin Garrett. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Class of 1956 Gadsden High school, deacons of Cherry Street Baptist Church and all personal friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cherry Street Baptist Church 520 Cleveland Ave, Attalla, AL 35954 or to your favorite charity.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M. at Morgan Funeral Chapel.
The family wishes to express appreciation to their mothers many best friends, who contributed so much to her life because she treasured each of them. They would also like to express appreciation to Gadsden Health Care and Enhabit Hospice.
