A Memorial service for Mr. Hammett will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel, Attalla, on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 1:00pm. Visitation will be prior to the service at 12:30pm.
Donnie was born on August 17, 1953 and resided in Attalla, AL. He loved old cars and trucks, and could tell you the year, make and model of any car from the 1930's to the 1990's, when they all began to look alike. Donnie loved for me to plant flowers, so he could brag about how pretty they were. He loved Nascar, fishing, being outdoors and how newborn puppies smelled. He was a packrat, but called all his items, collections. Donnie was a kind, gentle and loving man, but when needed, "Hambone" could be a mean SOB that wouldn't back down as he fiercely protected his family.
Words cannot express all the memories I have of my Donnie. He was a complex man. He kept most of his feelings to himself but he couldn't hide those beautiful green eyes from me as they told me more than words ever could. He made sure I always knew that I was the love of his life, as he is mine. He never forgot my birthday, Valentines Day or our anniversary; and spent so much time picking out the perfect card to express his love to me.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.O. and Nellie Hammett, his son, Michael A Hammett, as Donnie called him, "Daddy's littlest baby boy"; brother, Jimmy; and sisters, Mildred, Evelyn, Edna, Joyce, Pat, Phyllis, and Faye.
Donnie is survived by the love of his life, Debra L. Hammett; daughter, Samantha (Ralph) Cantrell; son, Donnie (Mary) Hammett, three grandchildren, Trinity, Haden and Brooklyn; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks from Mrs. Debra is given to Carolyn Hammett, Sandra "Doodle" Sullivan, and Beverly Jackson, without their counsel and support I could not have coped with the drastic changes in my life.
Morgan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
