September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in the history of this country, but September 11, 1934 was one of the brightest days because on that day Carolyn Virginia Blackmon was welcomed into this world by Cranston and Vera Perkins Blackmon.
On March 17, 2023 Carolyn was welcomed into heaven by Jesus. She was reunited with her sweetheart Bill. Bill’s first words to her at that reunion were probably, “Well Carolyn, I have been waiting for you.”
In 1951, she met a handsome Marine, named Bill Whisenant, who was visiting Alabama. Neither of them ever looked back. Carolyn and Bill married on September 12, 1953 and started a journey that lasted until Bill’s death on December 20, 2020. During that journey they welcomed two children, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Carolyn was a member of Reed Memorial Baptist Church where she and her dear friends, Joyce Bailey and Robbie Brock formed the “Reed Memorial Trio.” She loved to sing and she said that she believed that heaven would be filled with beautiful music. The Trio is singing together again, so the music in heaven is sweeter than ever.
She loved spending time with her family and she would say when we were together that those were her happiest days, and she wished they would never end.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Whisenant; parents, Cranston and Vera Blackmon and sister, Gail Blackmon Leeman.
She is survived by her children, Tim and Debbie Whisenant, Beverly and Ricky Thomason; Grandchildren, Courtney and David Couch, Shannon and Andy Harrison, and Nick Thomason; Great Grandchildren, Mason Couch, Hadley Couch, Kaylee Harrison, and Kinzlee Harrison; Special Nephew, Rich Leeman, and his daughters Kaylen and Carsen Leeman; Sister-in-law, Clara Whisenant, numerous other relatives and friends and her best buddy, Miss Kitty.
Carolyn was a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was a devout Christian who led by example. Our cousin Neysa described her as the epitome of southern grace and charm. Another cousin Kirk would refer to her as our family’s true Southern bell.
Visitation will be Monday, March 20, 2023 from 12:30pm-2pm, with services starting at 2:00pm. Rev Jimmy Bailey will be officiating. Burial will be at Rainbow Memorial Gardens.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.morganfuneralchapel.com for the Whisenant family.
