Zachary grew up with his family in South Dakota. He was the son of Joseph and Lois Johnson and has two sisters, Katie (Johnson) Dempster and Sarah (Johnson) Keller. Zach moved to Macon, Ga in 1994, and attended Central High School, and graduated from Georgia College and State University.
God gifted Zach with many talents, one being a winning personality, which served him well as he entered the world of politics, and government affairs. He was blessed at his role and was able to work with so many agencies and sectors within the state of Georgia. Zach started his government career in Macon, with former Georgia State Senate Majority Whip, Cecil Staton. Zach later was a lobbyist with the State Bar of Georgia, as well as vice president of government relations with McGuireWoods Consulting. Zach also achieved the role as Certified Purchasing agent, which is held by only a few in the state of Georgia. Due to his experience, Zach was selected as a member of Georgia First Commissions task force on State Procurement for Small Businesses as well as served on the Georgia Technology Authority Innovation Committee. Zach was a long time, liked member of the business and political community.
Zach strived hard at what he did and always left some extra time for what he loved most, his young family, and baseball. Zach loved baseball and taking his family to a game was a favorite frequent outing. His love of baseball started early, playing ball all through his childhood, leading him to continue his love of the sport into adulthood. He followed the Braves and Cubs religiously, watching and attending countless games. He knew their schedules by heart and would often try to find times where they were playing each other (with a big bonus if Billy Joel was in town at the same time). But His love of professional baseball was only surpassed by his love of teaching and coaching his kids in little league. He would arrive an hour before the game and stay two hours after as well. His mornings would be spent warming up the kids for the game with catch in the front yard, then move to the batting cages that he built for them in the backyard. A dream he always wanted as a kid, a backyard batting cage. He was an incredible coach. He would volunteer his time to work with countless little leaguers in the hopes of improving everyone’s game. His favorite meal was right there at the ballpark, a cold Coca-Cola and a hot dog.
Of all of Zach's many accomplishments and accolades, he was most proud to be the father of his three children: Knox (“Bubba” age 8), Wells (“Rooty” age 6) and Zoey (“Fluffy” age 3), with long time love and partner, Jen Swindall. From the moment they were born, everything he did revolved around them and their happiness. He enjoyed spending time singing with Zoey, or playing ball with the boys. His walls were always covered from floor to ceiling with their artwork, his calendar filled with their activities, and would rush home to tuck them in bed at night. They were his reason for striving, his entire world. He loved them so much.
Zach was a light for God and his death will not stop that from shining. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds, and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16. Growing up, Zach was involved in the church, where his father was a music minister. Zach worked hard at building his faith and trust. His mother named him Zachary because she loved the biblical meaning, "the Lord has remembered", and Zach certainly will be remembered.
We are hopeful that you can join us in a celebration of his life at a service on Friday, March 29, at 11:00 am, with a visitation to follow.
