Winifred R. Plunkett, 91, of Dunwoody died early Monday morning, May 6, 2013 at home. Mrs. Plunkett was the daughter of Carl David and Myrtle Keel Rosenbaum. She was reared in Tarboro, North Carolina, and graduated from Tarboro High School in 1939. She then graduated from St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh, NC, in 1941 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in 1943. She was an avid tennis player winning the women’s championship at UNC and several state competitions. She was a gifted pianist in her youth and would play the organ for Episcopal parishes in rural communities near Tarboro before leaving for college. After graduation, she taught school and then joined the American Red Cross as a recreation counselor working with military hospitals. It was at Camp Blanding, Florida that she met Capt.Woodrow C. Plunkett of Atlanta. Capt. Plunkett was recovering from wounds received overseas in World War II. They were married on December 30, 1947.
Upon her moving to Atlanta in 1948, she taught Math at Russell High School in East Point. After 1956 she was a homemaker as well as a substitute teacher. She and her husband were active at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in Atlanta since 1972. Together with her husband, she enjoyed attending 508 Paratrooper Regiment Reunions.
Like her husband, Woody, she was very much an extrovert. She had an amazing memory and upon meeting someone could always find a connection between the two of you. Always a devoted wife and mother, along with her husband, she laid the foundation of faith in Christ for her two children (and their families) and they were blessed to know God's unconditional love by the unconditional love that she and Woody showered on them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Feb. 20, 2006) and brother, Carl D. Rosenbaum, Jr. (June 25, 2006). She is survived by two sons, Dr. Lee W. Plunkett and his wife Jenny of Duluth, GA and Mr. Gray C. Plunkett of Dunwoody, GA. Also survived by a grandson, James Plunkett and his wife Beth of Doraville, GA, a granddaughter Stacey Wright and her husband Jeff of Cumming, GA, a great-grandson, Eli Plunkett, a great granddaughter Josie Wright, two sister-in-laws Betty W. Rosenbaum of Fayetteville, NC and Ruth P. Bowen of Smyrna, GA and a former daughter-in-law Frankie Plunkett of Cumming, GA. She leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the many friends and neighbors for all their wonderful love and care for Mrs. Plunkett, which enabled her to remain in her home as her health declined the past few years.
The family will receive friends at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill on Peachtree Road (next to Oglethorpe University) on Thursday, May 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be Friday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church on Ashford-Dunwoody Road. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends in the parlor of the church at noon.
Flowers or donations in her memory may be given to St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA, the American Red Cross (Military Families Support), and St. Mary's School, Raleigh, NC.
