Tom lived almost his entire life in Georgia, except for a short time in New Jersey during his training as an army Lieutenant. Born and raised in Augusta, Tom was the third of four children. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a business degree in 1968, and started working for Northwestern Mutual soon thereafter. He lived the remainder of his life in Atlanta, mostly on the city’s beautiful tree-lined east side.
Tom sold life insurance and employee benefits, but his clients would say his impact was much greater than what could be captured in insurance policies and benefit forms. He was a partner, a friend, a coach, a mentor, and someone who cared deeply about his clients’ passions, interests, and goals. He was an introvert, yet he relished in the relationships with his clients and his guidance touched them in myriad ways. His impact on his clients is best summarized in a letter he received recently from a colleague who was recounting Tom’s career. The letter ends with “You have laid much treasure in heaven Tom Daniel.”
As a father, a husband, a son, and a friend Tom was a picture of selflessness and goodness. He was our biggest cheerleader, knew every detail about our lives, and was always there to provide wise counsel. He had a quick whit balanced by a deeply practical view of life, but perhaps most impactful was his relentless optimism and belief in the fundamental goodness of people. Tom was a huge sports fan, with a particular love for golf. He was most fond of the 12th hole at the Augusta National and the 8th hole at Druid Hills Country Club.
Tom is survived by his father Thomas Richard Daniel, Sr., his three siblings Margaret, Raleigh, and Warren, his wife Susan, his five sons Thomas, Patrick, David, Hays, and Steven, his five daughters-in-law Beth, Meaghan, Anne, Kelly, and Sarah, and his six grandchildren Miriam, Hannah, Colden, West, Owen, and Dillon.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday March 28th at 11AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 2461 Peachtree Road Atlanta, GA 30305. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Huntington's Disease Society of America.
