Sara "Sally" Wehr

Dr. Sara Jane (Sally) Henderson Wehr of Decatur died on September 12, 2015 at the age of 87. Sally was born on December 5, 1927 in Cohutta, GA to Elizabeth McCord Henderson and John Owen Henderson. Preceding her in death was her loving husband of 53 years, Richard (Dick) Wade Wehr, her brothers John Owen Henderson, Jr and Joseph Henderson. She is survived by her sons, Jay Wehr and wife Lori of Nashville, TN, Van Wehr and wife Annie of Roswell, GA and grandchildren, Tyler, Eva, Jake, Libby and Maggie Wehr. She is also survived by sister Elizabeth Ann Kelly of Rancho Murieta, CA and several nieces and nephews. Sally attended school in her early years in Ohio, NJ, and PA, graduating from Kennett High School in Kennett Square, PA. She was a graduate of the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. She then entered the field of education, teaching Sp. Ed. in the Nashville, TN school system all while completing her Master’s degree at Peabody College. At Peabody, Sally and Dick met and were married in Jan. ’59. She then taught in Tallahassee, FL. And later moved to Tampa where she taught in the Hillsborough County School system. They moved to Atlanta in 1966. Since that time, Sally has worked at the State Dept. of Ed. as a Sp. Ed. consultant and in the DeKalb City Schools as Diag. Coord, for Preschool Sp. Ed. In 1976, Sally received her Ph.D. in Behavior Disorders and Special Education Administration at Georgia State University and worked as an instructor in Sp. Ed. at GSU. In retirement, Sally has been active in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pilot Club of Atlanta, square dancing, golf and bridge at Druid Hills Country Club. Most important of all has been the time she has spent with her sons and grandchildren. Her memorial service will be held on Thursday, September, 17 at 11:00AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1438 Sheridan Road, NE, Atlanta. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 16 from 5:00-7:00PM at H.M. Patterson and Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Camp Westminster, c/o Westminster Presbyterian Church.
