Richard A. Parks (Dick), resident artist of the Georgia Ornithological Society passed away on Saturday December 14th. He was a graduate of Tech High and Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Architecture. He was a veteran and served as Naval Officer during WWII on various ships in Pacific. Dick was well known among the ornithology society and was the last living charter member of the Georgia Ornithological Society as well as being a member of the Atlanta Bird Club, American Ornithologist's Union, Wilson Ornithological Society, National Audubon Society and Atlanta Audubon Society, as well as a being a charter member of the Georgia Conservancy. He was best known as a wildlife artist and illustrator painting birds, almost exclusively. His remaining art collection of over two hundred paintings with all field notes, studies and working sketches are housed at the Hargrett Special Collections library at the University of Georgia. He is survived by three sons, Richard A. Parks Jr. (Andrea), David R. Parks and Paul A. Parks, four grandchildren, Angela Parks Masand, Colleen Parks, Matt Parks, Kasey Linhart, and five step grandchildren, Scott Haney, TK Speer, Joe Speer, Mary Champion and Rachel Gazaway.
Funeral services will be held Monday December 23rd at 10:00 AM at H.M. Patterson at Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, Ga 30319, with a viewing on Sunday the 22nd from 4:00 PM to 6:00PM at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Georgia Ornithological Society for the Richard A. Parks Young Birders Scholarship will be appreciated.
