Philip was born on November 25, 1942, to parents Fred Estes Martin and Addie Izola Martin. For most of his life, his birthday would be celebrated all month long—a blend of being the cherished youngest child and possessing a larger-than-life personality. He was beloved by his older siblings, Margery and Bub.
His life was defined by a strong faith in Jesus Christ, which was inherited from his parents. His father, a man of both practical skill and spiritual calling, balanced running a welding shop with serving as pastor to a local congregation in Atlanta. His mother managed the welding shop’s office and played piano at their church on Sundays. Philip led worship at their church, and grew up to become a steadfast pillar of faith, holding firm to his unwavering belief in God until his final breath. He was a longtime member of Mount Paran Church of God in Atlanta.
A lifelong scholar, Philip attended Annie E. West Elementary and Roosevelt High School. While in high school, he was elected to senior class president and served as the captain of the golf team. He was named “Best All Around” by his peers, a title which his family would agree suited him for the rest of his life. He attended Georgia Tech and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
Following his college graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Diane, in 1964. The pair raised two wonderful sons together and remained deeply in love for nearly six decades. Soon after their marriage, Philip enlisted in the United States Army, where he distinguished himself and ultimately attained the rank of Captain.
Philip worked as an engineer for several years, before returning to school to obtain his JD. He attended nighttime law school at Emory University, eventually passed the Georgia bar exam, and worked as a lawyer for the rest of his career. An accomplished legal advocate, Philip was sworn in to be able to argue cases in front of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Philip was an avid golfer, and you could often find him on the golf course with family and friends. He loved traveling for the love of golf, visiting many courses and attending tournaments as frequently as possible. Philip was a dedicated member of the Oaks Course and won several of their club championships during his tenure. His golf skills led to not one, but two career hole-in-ones.
Philip is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Addie Martin; siblings, Fred Kenneth “Bub” Martin and Helen Margery Hunter; and beloved wife, Diane York Martin. He is survived by his sons, Philip “Marty” Martin (Kelly) and Frederick “Freddy” Martin (Craig); grandchildren, Blake Tyers, Emily Rojas (Erick), and Philip “Luke” Martin; and grand-pets, Bodie, Sofie, Gia, and Kai.
A celebration of Philip’s life will be held at the Bobby Jones Golf Course located at 2205 Northside Dr NW in Atlanta, GA, on July 18 at 2 p.m. To celebrate Philip's lifelong passion for golf, the family invites attendees to wear their favorite golf attire to the service—a final 'fore!' to a man who always brought his A-game, on and off the course. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service.
