Born September 27, 1923 in Minneapolis Minnesota, raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, daughter of Thomas Henry and Loretta Early Stuart. Patricia attended nursing school in St. Louis MO where she met and fell passionately in love with Robert Carlyle Garner, a pediatric resident at Barnes Children’s Hospital. They married February, 1949 and subsequently lived in Denver, CO, Nurnberg Germany, Ft. Benning GA and made permanent residence in Atlanta commencing 1958.
She was an active member of the Christ the King Cathedral and school community, an avid tennis player in both mixed and ladies competitions, and Piedmont Hospital and Egleston Children’s Hospital auxiliary volunteer. Her avocation for many years centered on the High Museum of Art, as a foundation member at its genesis. As her creativity was seen in personal fashion and style, her studies at the museum unearthed an artistic talent that was channeled towards providing tours as a docent of the museum’s permanent and travelling collections to students and adults. Her interests and study of art turned back to Christ the King Cathedral in creating a body of work on the history and significance of the stained glass windows in the sanctuary building.
She is predeceased by her husband, Robert C. Garner, M.D., and is survived by her children and their families: Dr. Stuart and Ginger Garner of Charlotte, North Carolina; Mary Allen and H.J. Ewing IV of Milton, Ga. Jeanne Garner of Lawrenceville, New Jersey; Laura Lee Gentry and Brian Pilger of Atlanta Ga. Their families include 10 grandchildren: Ryan Ewing Wolfe, Tom Stuart Garner, David Carlyle Garner, Patrick James Ewing, Ellen Alexander Greer, Kate Irene Garner, Robert Garner Greer, Elizabeth Gentry Pilger, Carly Gentry Pilger, and John Porter Pilger. As well, she is survived by her siblings: Ann Hooper, Rosemarie Bartsch and Tommy Stuart of Little Rock AK and Jean Gordon of Thousand Oaks, CA.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 19 at 10 am at the Cathedral of Christ the King. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the High Museum of Art (High Museum of Art Atlanta, Attn: Development Office, 1280 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta GA 30309, reference Patricia Garner).
