Nelson Julian Allen

Nelson Allen, of Alpharetta, passed away at Piedmont Hospital on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the age of 69, due to post-surgical complications. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Jane Helms Allen, his brother Dr. Louis David Allen (Lynn), his son Jeffrey Stephen Allen (Abigail), his grandson Collier Finn Allen and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Sylvia Allen, and his brother, Dr. Charles Merrell Allen.

Nelson was born on October 19, 1948 in Augusta, Georgia and graduated from Richmond Academy where he was a member of “Musketeers” Varsity Wrestling Team. He proudly graduated from the University of Georgia with a Psychology degree. During his working career, Nelson held several positions in the Service Departments of Buckhead car dealerships, which is where he met Jane, his true soul mate. However, for the ten years before his retirement in 2016, Nelson held the job he loved and enjoyed the most, a school bus driver for Fulton County Transport.

Although Nelson’s retirement was not a long one, he thoroughly enjoyed his collection of trains and train memorabilia, his riding lawn mower and associated yard work, travelling with Jane throughout the United States to National Parks and historic sites, and his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. However, Nelson’s greatest passion was for his faithful dogs, cats and birds. He always had one of them in his lap or at his feet.

Nelson’s genuine smile and quick wit and humor will be missed along with his zest for life and dedication to his work, family and friends. He was known for his ability to tell a story, maybe true and maybe not, with such animation and detail, that you had to believe every word he was saying.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at H. M. Patterson & Son -Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, at noon. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs.
