Mary Callaway Saunders, 97, of Atlanta, died on June 15, 2015. She was born in Atlanta on March 26, 1918, to Mary Will Moore and Joseph Bunyan Callaway. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Martha Markert, and Charlotte LeVert, and by her brother Joe Callaway. She is survived by her four children, Edward M. Saunders, Jr. (Merttie) of Boston, Massachusetts, John D. Saunders (Gloria) of Atlanta, Nancy Landers (Tom) of Atlanta and James C. Saunders (Annette) of Atlanta, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She attended Girls High in Atlanta and graduated in 1936, where she was an all-city guard on the women’s basketball team. She lived most of her adult life in the Druid Hills section of Atlanta. She was a long time member of the Druid Hills Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was the first female Deacon. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister and friend to many. She will be remembered for her family gatherings, hospitality, kindness, chocolate brownies, and being active in her church. Her home was always open to all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A service of celebration is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 11 o’clock at Patterson’s Spring Hill, 1020 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30310. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 from 6 until 8 o’clock at Spring Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to one’s own favorite charity.
