Dr. Pentecost graduated from McCallie Preparatory School (1943) and from Princeton University (1948) Cum Laude, where he earned his Varsity letter in soccer, served as co-business manager of the Daily Princetonian and was a member of the Cottage Club. From 1945-46 he served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Emory University Medical School (1953), and was a resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1953-1958. He practiced medicine for 38 years at Piedmont Hospital.
Among other offices, Dr. Pentecost served as Chairman of the Board of Piedmont Hospital Foundation, Founding Chairman of the Board of Fayette County Hospital,
Trustee of AG Rhodes Health and Rehabilitation over 50 years, Trustee of the board of Westminster Schools, Chairman of the Board of Westminster, Trustee of the board of The Atlanta Mission, Trustee for J.B.Campbell Foundation, Trustee for Shallenberger Trust.
He worshipped at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, where he was a Deacon, a Ruling Elder and a Trustee. He was life member and President of the Board of Trustees of the Piedmont Driving Club.
Dr. Pentecost is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Mann Pentecost, and 3 of their 4 children: son Mark P. Pentecost III (Jane), daughters Martha S. Pentecost and Claire Pentecost, grandchildren Carden Safran, Owen and Thomas Pentecost, Aislinn, Alix and Eliza Pentecost Farren.
Private graveside service at Westview Cemetery officiated by Rev. Wesley Channell. Family receiving at the Piedmont Driving Club from 1 until 3 o’clock, Thursday, November 13. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Atlanta Mission or to the Samaritan Center at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta.
