Dr. John Dabney Hutcheson Jr.

John Dabney Hutcheson Jr. of Atlanta died on February 18th at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Carol Pierannunzi; children, John D. Hutcheson III of Atlanta, Anna Rose Hutcheson of Athens, and Christine Mashburn-Paul of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Clarissa Paul; sisters, Glorianna Wilson, Rebecca Harkins, and Holly Hutcheson; nephew, Winfield Wilson; niece, Jennifer Harkins; and good friend, Andy Drooker. John Hutcheson meant a lot to his friends and family and held names including Papa John and Little Dab.

Dr. Hutcheson received a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1969 and was twice named as Regents Professor of the year during his tenure as a faculty member at Georgia State University. He was the founder of the GSU Center for Public and Urban Research. He retired from teaching in 2000 and pursued a successful consulting career, developing organizational research studies for private, public, and nonprofit organizations. Dr. Hutcheson authored five books, over one hundred articles and numerous government reports.

John had a wide range of interests and was a great collector of many things, among them political and sports memorabilia. A Falcons season ticket holder for over thirty years, he was also an active member of the Grady High School Football Boosters. John was a passionate soul who felt strongly about helping the poor and improving equality for all people. He was unafraid to take a stand. He was faithful and true friend to those with whom he was close. Though expressing emotions was not a strong point, he loved and valued his family. He wanted those around him to be happy.

The family will receive friends Monday, February 22nd from 2 until 5 o’clock in the afternoon at H. M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry, 1035 Donnelly Avenue, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30310.
