Jerry Lee Hitt

Mr. Jerry L. Hitt, 84, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away November 20, 2015. He was born in Jackson, Missouri. After graduating from Jackson High School, he received a BS degree in Education from Southeast Missouri State University and a MS degree in Educational Administration from Boston University. His college career as interrupted from 1950 – 1954, when he served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His professional career included public school teaching for several years in Massachusetts followed by holding the position of Associate Director of Admissions at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. In 1965 he accepted the position of Associate Director of Admissions at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. Thru the years later he was promoted to Director of Admissions. Following an extensive career at Georgia Tech, he retired as Director of Admissions Emeritus with 34 years of credited service. His interests included a lifetime of competitive softball, recreational golf in retirement and gardening. He is preceded in death by his parents, Price and Pauline Hitt; two older brothers, Eugene and Elwood; and his oldest daughter, Merri Gaye Strauss. Survivors include Marlene his wife of 61 years; Merri Gaye’s daughter, Courtney; son Michael of Roswell, Georgia, and his children, Nathanael, Bryant and Madeleine; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Jack Herr of Nashville, Tennessee, and their sons, Hunter, Brad and John; and daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Carlos Fox of Alpharetta, Georgia, and their son, Grant. A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the King on Friday, November 27th at 2PM, followed by his memorial drive thru the Georgia Tech campus ending at Gordon Biersch, 3242 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta for his celebration of his wonderful life, starting at approximately 5’oclock . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Georgia Tech Foundation, 760 Spring Street NW, Suite 400, Atlanta, Ga 30308 with the request that it be credited to the Merri Gaye Hitt – Strauss Memorial Scholarship Fund.
