The Greatest Generation lost another member Friday evening, August 20, 2021. Helen was born on a farm in rural Alabama on October 31, 1922. Helen attended Auburn University and then moved to Norfolk, Virginia to assist family. Happily, she met a charming navy sailor, Thomas H. Powell. They married while Tom was completing his education at William and Mary, began their family, and then moved to Atlanta where Tom started his career as a certified public accountant rising to name partner in Powell & Booth.
Helen was the daughter of Georgia and Oree Baxter. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob Baxter and William Baxter; and her husband, Thomas Herbert Powell, Jr.
Helen is survived by sons; Tom (Jo Ann), Mark (Beth), and Phil (Robie); her grandchildren: Tom Powell(Christina), Robert Powell (Kate) and Laura Smith (Kyle). Helen had 9 great grandchildren; Elizabeth, Thomas, John William, Andrew, Eloise, and Mills Powell; Henry, Molly and Campbell Smith.
She loved hostessing her family; a lovely set table with silver, cloth napkins and fine china in her home filled with the antiques she enjoyed collecting. She loved gardening, her pet dogs and traveling the world. Helen was a woman who exemplified both traditional femininity as well as an uncommon fortitude. She was a beautiful and independent woman, always fashionable and well put together.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 24 at Arlington Cemetery, with arrangements by H.M. Patterson & Sons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Atlanta Humane Society or to the charity of your choosing.
