Died: February 19, 2014, Atlanta, GA
Evelyn Zack H’Doubler passed away peacefully at home with her loving family in attendance on February 19, 2014.
She was born August 17, 1928 in Pine Bluff Arkansas, the second child of Peter and Mary Zack. She attended Pine Bluff High School and then Chevy Chase Junior College in Maryland. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a major in History and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. At the University of Arkansas she met the love of her life, Peter Bemis H’Doubler. They were married in 1954.
Pete’s surgical career took them to Boston, Washington DC and ultimately to his hometown of Springfield Missouri where they settled and raised their family. As a young person, Evelyn was a member of the Junior Service of Pine Bluff and then when she moved to Springfield, a member of the Junior League of Springfield. She was a member of PEO both in Springfield and in Atlanta where they later moved to be near their children.
Evelyn was also member of Christ Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild. She was active in the community, serving on the board of trustees of the Springfield Art Museum and served on numerous committees at the Greenwood Laboratory School, where her children attended. She enjoyed her theater appreciation group, her bridge group and especially, later in life, the friendships she formed through her lifelong love of Antiques.
When her children were older, she and three friends opened an antique and gift shop in Springfield called The Chanticleer, Inc. The shop evolved over time and she became the sole owner. Over the years, Evelyn studied, collected and restored antiques. Evelyn’s passion for antiques gave her many hours of enjoyment. After 27 years she closed The Chanticleer and began importing and selling containers of French Antiques.
Evelyn enjoyed growing roses and other flowers in the garden she and Pete loved so much. Later in life, she and Pete discovered a love for travel especially to France. They enjoyed many happy times in Paris.
Evelyn will be remembered as a woman of style and substance who lived graciously and set high standards for those she loved. She was a warm and kind person who loved her family and close friends.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Peter Bemis H’Doubler, MD. She is survived, her three children, Peter B. H’Doubler, Jr. MD and his wife Karen Horan H’Doubler, Mary Triffany Cook and her husband John Cook, MD, William Zack H’Doubler, MD and his wife Carolyn Loscalzo H’Doubler, MD, her sister, Billie Zack Mahaffy.
