David Moffett Stevenson, 71, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully at MD Anderson Cancer Center on Saturday, December 1st, 2018. David was born in Camilla, GA to Dr. Clyde Allison Stevenson and Louise Holzman Stevenson on February 15th, 1947.
David graduated from Mitchell County High School and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Wofford College. Following his graduation from Wofford College, David reported to Lackland Air Force Base in July 1969 for Officer Training School in the United States Air Force. He underwent Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base and graduated as part of Class 71-03 in September 1970. David went on to serve for seven years in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Vietnam War, flying C-130s from Cam Rahn Bay on missions to supply and transport troops throughout Vietnam and the region. Following the conclusion of David’s military service, he began his career at Delta Airlines where he flew domestically and internationally to Europe and South America before retiring in 2003 as a Captain. Having had his first flying lesson at age fourteen, aviation was a lifelong passion for David.
David was a kind and thoughtful man of the highest character. He was fiercely loyal and devoted to his family and friends. A longtime Atlanta resident, David was a member of Capital City Club and Northside United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with family and friends at his St. George Island, Florida beach house and continued to enjoy frequent international travel throughout his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Joanne Nanney Stevenson; his sons Thomas Hewitt Stevenson of London, England and Daniel Nanney Stevenson of Atlanta, GA; his sister Mary Stevenson Ryan (Jim) of Burlington, NC; his brother-in-law Michael McLean Nanney (Suzanne O’Malley) of Plano, TX; his nieces and nephews, Lori Bartlett (Pete) of Tampa, FL, Stephen Ryan (Laura) of Raleigh, NC, Kate Nanney (George Padis) of Dallas, TX, Jeff Nanney of Hong Kong; and his great-nieces and great-nephews Matt Bartlett, Allison Bartlett, Kate Bartlett, Jim Ryan, Charlotte Ryan, Ed Ryan, and Caroline Padis.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday, December 6, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319 with a private graveside service to follow at Georgia National Cemetery.
