Charles (Charlie) Kelly, a retired Associated Press photographer passed away peacefully at Wesley Woods Towers in Atlanta, GA on Friday, June 3rd, 2016 at the age of 84. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Lois Carter Kelly; his son, Alex, daughter-in-law, Shane Taylor Kelly, and a loving extended family. He is preceded in death by his son Charles Kelly, Jr., and his grandson, Burke Kelly. Charlie was born in Charlotte, NC to Claire Binford and Richard Kelly. He entered Cumberland College at age sixteen, and later transferred to Wake Forest. His first job out of college was as a retouch artist for the Charlotte Observer. Kelly joined The Associated Press in Memphis in 1961 and moved to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, AP bureau the following year. In 1966, he was then transferred to the AP's Atlanta bureau, where he was based until retiring in the mid-1990s. During his career with the AP, Kelly covered local and national sporting and political events. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 17th at 2:30 pm at Wesley Woods Towers, in Decatur, GA at 1825 Clifton Road, NE.
