Charles Hunt Brown, Jr. died from leukemia at his home in Dunwoody surrounded by his family on July 7, 2011. He was 83 years old. Charlie was born May 28, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Judge Charles H. Brown Sr., and Marie Stead Brown, formerly of Macon, Georgia. His father was a football star at Vanderbilt University and coached for Alabama Southern. Charlie inherited his father’s love for the game and played for Ramsey High School in Birmingham, earned a scholarship to play on some of the greatest teams with the legendary Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity. He earned his masters in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech in 1951 and upon his graduation served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserves during the Korean War. He pursued his life long passion for football and officiated as an umpire in the SEC for fifteen years. He was a member of many organizations, not the least of which were The Touchdown Club, The University Yacht Club at Lake Lanier, a life member of the Capital City Club and a past Commander of the United States Power Squadron of Atlanta in which he attained the highest ratings.
He was self-employed as a manufacturer’s representative in industrial and outdoor lighting throughout the southeast and enjoyed snow skiing, boating and amateur radio. He retired in 1997.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Phyllis Clarke Brown, his daughter, Lyn Brown Hunt (Lowry) of Madison, Georgia; daughter Cheryl Brown Sykes of Sandy Springs; and son, Charles Hunt Brown III of Atlanta and three grandchildren and three great grandsons. He is also survived by his step-children, Reba Clarke Totten (Donald) of Asheville, NC and Amanda Susan Clarke of Chicago, Il, all of whom he loved dearly.
The funeral will be held in the Chapel at Dunwoody United Methodist at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11th with Dr. Wiley Stephens officiating. The family will receive visitors at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Internment will be in the Brown family plot in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama; graveside services well be held at approximately 3:00 pm CDST and will be officiated by the Reverend David Melton.
