Michael David Lanard

The Athens native was born to parents Louis and Marcile Lanard, the original and long-term proprietors of the downtown staple Barnett's Newsstand. An avid member of the YMCA, he spent his youth under the tutelage of Cobern Kelley and was a standout student athlete in football and track.

After graduating Athens High in 1968, he went on to the University of Georgia and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1972. Married in 1975 he began a family and eventually would have four children, Kelley Connery (husband Jorth), Kori, Michael and Lauren Lanard who survive him along with 7 grandchildren.

Throughout his life, he never let his athleticism wain, participating in dozens of marathons, triathlons and other races as well as playing softball, basketball, and motocross and was a savant on the volleyball court. Mike also encouraged his children and their peers with their own athletic endeavors and could often be found on the sideline of a field, court or wrestling mat cheering his heart out. His mentoring nature carried into the recovery community where he was an extensive contributor and helped many. In addition to his other hobbies, Mike held a deep lifelong love of the outdoors hiking, hunting, and fishing his way around the globe, spreading his knowledge and passion along the way.

Mike spent most of his career in sales but got into the construction industry in his fifties where he gained a reputation not only for his nonstop work ethic and skill, but also for his impeccable banter always bringing laughs and keeping moral high. 'Pops' as he was known in the construction community will be sorely missed. In a full life, filled with its challenges, he lived wholly and touched many with his wit and ever-present humor. Across all of his endeavors, he was always quick with a joke, good-natured jab or perspective, gaining him many friends and love from his family.

A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, November 16 from 4-6 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home 3195 Atlanta Hwy., Athens, Ga. 30606.
