Born in Athens, Mr. Williams was the son of the late Leonard Leon Williams Sr. and Mattie Mae Tate Williams. A United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he retired after 34 years of service as an engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation, and then worked for another 20 years with E.R. Snell Contractor Inc. Mr. Williams was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia, loved Georgia football, and was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by children: Jerry Williams, Debbie Williams and Shelia Schroder Samples.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Peggy Louise Williams of Athens; children: Linda Williams Kelly of Cornelia, Johnny Williams of Athens, Anthony Schroder (Cathyann) of Danielsville and Barry Finley (Leah) of Athens; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m., in the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
