Edna Fulmer Lanier, 93, of Athens, GA died Friday, September 30, 2022. Born February 17, 1929, in Metter, GA, she was the daughter of the late Edward J. Fulmer and Mary Creed Fulmer, predeceased by brother Edward J. Fulmer, Jr. and sister Juanita Fulmer Bracewell.
Mrs. Lanier was married to T.Z. Lanier, Jr., for 53 years before his death in 2002. They lived in Millen, Savannah, Statesboro, and Athens. She was a graduate of Metter High School and received a BS Degree in Business Administration from Georgia State College for Women and MS in Education from Georgia Southern College. She taught for 3o years in Millen, Savannah, Athens, and Bulloch County. A devoted and respected teacher, she held professional memberships in Georgia Education Association, National Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority, and a Life Membership in Georgia Retired Teachers Association. In Statesboro, she was an active member of the Symphony Guild, the Garden Club, Forest Heights Country Club, and various tennis and bridge groups.
After moving back to Athens in 1989, Mrs. Lanier became a member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the Board of United Methodist Women and was an active member of Circle 6 and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was a member of Jennings Mill Country Club and later Athens Country Club where she was an avid tennis and bridge player. She was a member of University Woman's Club, having served on its Board and participated in activities while continuing to hold membership in Symphony Guild and Georgia Museum of Art.
Mrs. Lanier and her husband were loyal and devoted supporters of UGA Football, Basketball, and Baseball programs for local and out-of-town games.
Beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mrs. Lanier is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas (Tom) Z. Lanier, III (Jan), James (Jim) Edward Lanier (Lydia), of Athens, and Scott Alan Lanier, of Woodstock, six grandchildren, Beth West (Adam), of Athens, Kathryn Williams (Joel), of Roswell, Bo Lanier (Leigh) of Milton, Stan Lanier, Kelly Goekjian (Zack) of Athens, and Alan Lanier (Whitney), of Charlotte, NC., six great grandchildren, Lanier and Price West, Jackson Williams, Emmy, Zeb, and Zane Lanier, and Wilson Lanier.
Surviving are sister-in-law, Marie Lanier Kemp of Skidaway Island, nieces and nephews John Bracewell, Barbara Bracewell Keith, Sommer Fulmer Bower, Mark Fulmer, Gwen Collins, Yvonne Jett, Bryan Brown, Billy Brown, Mary Spivey Harrell, Lynn Lanier, Kenneth Kemp, John Thomas Kemp, William L. Lanier, Jr, John Lanier, Melodie Lanier Mobley.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin Street. A reception will follow in Hancock Hall.
