The funeral services for Emma Jean Tucker Johnson, born June 1, 1928 , will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, August 5, 2012, in the chapel at McConnell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 pm Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson, a Registered Nurse, graduated from Baptist School of Nursing in Columbia, S.C. in 1950. Her nursing career included service in The American Red Cross, Baptist Hospital in Columbia, Decatur General, and Athens Limestone Hospital. “Mrs. Jean,” as her peers at ALH affectionately knew her, retired for the third time in 2008, after 40 years of service. She worked in the E. R. for the last 33 years.
She, also, achieved professional credentials as a cosmetologist and cosmetologist instructor. With her husband, Bill, she founded Johnson’s Beauty Shop, and Johnson’s Beauty College.
She enjoyed helping others, gardening, canning, sewing, and needlework. She was a member of Eastside Church of Christ where she worshipped for 50 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Pierce “Bill” Johnson; a son, Ovie Ray Johnson; her parents, Raymond Robert and Anna Bell Tucker; and 4 brothers.
Survivors include daughters, Gwyndolyn Atkinson and husband Ray of Pulaski, TN, Molly Jean J. Bullington and husband David of Baton Rouge, LA.; sons, Robert Pierce Johnson and wife Diane of Springfield, TN, and Byron Lynn Johnson and wife Joy of Athens, AL.; brothers, Richard Tucker and wife Judy of Saluda, SC, Eugene Tucker and wife Judy of Lugoff, SC; sisters, Dean Jennings and Dorothy Hornsby of Columbia, SC. She was a hands on grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to 21, who called her “Memaw.”
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Travis Harvey, Byron Lynn Johnson II, Blake Johnson, Eric Johnson, Austin Harvey, Zachery Johnson and Chase Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Laurie Harvey, Laura Bullington Coble, Mary Bullington Bost, Emily Bullington, and Cami Johnson.
Caring for others, professionally and in her personal life, brought her much satisfaction and joy. It was her desire to help others achieve that goal at the professional level of nursing. In honor of her 60 year nursing career, The Jean Johnson Registered Nurse Scholarship has been established through the Athens Limestone Hospital Foundation. The goal of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a Limestone County Nursing student. More information can be obtained from the ALH Foundation, 256-233-9236,
