Joann Crowe passed away peacefully on June 8, 2024 with her family around her. Joann, affectionately known as Miss Joann by some in and around Templeton, California, was 87 years old. Joann, born Joann Herbeck, spent her early childhood in Bloomington, Illinois. She would share happy stories of her childhood sneaking walnuts from the bakery where her father worked and neighbor boys who watched after her when taking the bus to and from school when she was just 5 years old. At 16, she boarded a train for Los Angeles, California to find her father and eventually stayed in Los Angeles to live with her older sister, Lucille, until Joann married Melvin Crowe in 1955. Mel and Joann built a successful business in North Hollywood called Superfine Service. Superfine, first a Douglas then Texaco gas station, became a popular stop for truckers to service their 18-wheelers prior to entering the congestion of Los Angeles. Mel and Joann retired 1988 to 40 acres in the town of Templeton located in the California Central Coast. Mel passed in 1993. Joann sold the property and moved into a home down the hill where she lived for 30 years. Joann was a very active member of the community where she taught reading at Templeton Elementary, was a 2-term President of the Board for the Bethel Lutheran Church and a church hospitality volunteer. When Joann wasn’t giving her time, she enjoyed the friendships made bowling, playing golf, line dancing, joining exercise class, and sharing coffee with friends in the Atascadero McDonalds. Joann is survived by her brother Roger Johnson, a son and daughter, Clint and Caron (Joel) Scott, 4 grandchildren, Joel III, Jenell, Tammy, and Ashley, great granddaughters, Jacie and Lucy.
