Hazel Lucille Hunter of Santa Margarita died peacefully on January 27, 2015. She was born in Peoria, Arizona on January 31, 1920. She met her husband Andy, through her lifelong friend Mary Etta Jones of Arkansas, and married in 1940. After WWII they moved to Monterey County, had two sons, Mel and Ted, and settled in Santa Margarita in 1948. She became a mother figure to the neighborhood children who enjoyed her rolls and beans. She was a co-founder of the Santa Margarita Community Church, where she lovingly played the piano, and was known as Grandma Hazel. She was a huge part of her church. On occasion she played for the Rinconada Church and loved the company of old friends. Hazel enjoyed lunch at the Senior Center where she was able to visit old friends. She loved her family, church, music, neighbors, taking back-road rides, working in her yard, sitting on her deck, thrifting, reading her bible, her home and living in Santa Margarita. She worked at CDF in San Luis Obispo in the 1950’s, and retired from Cal Poly in the 1980’s. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Andy, and her son Mel Hunter. She is survived by her son Ted (Sharon) Hunter of Santa Margarita, daughter –in-law Colleen Hunter Love of Shell Beach, half sister Geniveve Furrey of Arizona, Grandson John (Rachel) Hunter of Santa Margarita and their three children: Julie, Andy and Sadie, Grand-daughter Bess (Matt) Gerig of Philadelphia and their three children: Veda, Clive and new baby Simon, Grandson Wes (Shelly) Love of Bakersfield and their two children Ellie and Andie, Grandson Chris Love of rural Arroyo Grande, Anne (Dave) Somerville of Santa Margarita, Loretta Bryant of Oregon, and many nieces and nephews of Arizona, Colorado and Washington. Hazel was much loved and will be extremely missed. There will be a Celebration of Life Potluck held on February 22, 2015 at Santa Margarita Community Hall at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Santa Margarita Community Church., PO Box 306 Santa Margarita, CA 93453 Santa Margarita, CA
