Robert RJ James Ruthven

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, Pa, grandpa and great-grandpa, R.J. Ruthven on February 21, 2014. R.J. was born in Weyburn, SK, on March 28, 1918 to Jim and Bessie Ruthven. Along with sister, Thelma they lived and farmed first in the Verwood area then moved to the Little Woody district. After R.J. completed his grade 12 he took Agriculture at the U of S in Saskatoon and began farming with his dad and Billy King for many years, continuing to farm with his son Calvin till 2012. He met the love of his life, Marion Berg and they married in 1949. Together they became ‘suitcase farmers’ with R.J. working at Patterson Motors in the winters and packing up the three kids in the spring to go farming. In his youth R.J. was an avid ball player. He enjoyed taking a camping trip each summer with the family. In later years he enjoyed trips to Scotland, England, Norway, Hawaii and bus trips to Alaska and to the Maritimes with Marion. He was predeceased by his parents, infant daughter Edna, his sister Thelma, in-laws Arnie & Lois Berg, and his dear wife of 58 years, Marion in 2008. RJ will be sadly missed and forever remembered with great love by his children, Randy (Shelley), Calvin (Marianne) and Valerie; grandchildren: Chris (Christina), Terry, Jeff (Marie), Rachel and Clay, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Guardian Grove, Providence Place in Moose Jaw and Dr. Dautremont whose love and care of Pa meant the world to us. Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 in Ross Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK. Pastor Arden Barden officiated. Tribute was delivered by grandsons, Jeff and Terry. Urn Bearer was grandson, Chris. Interment in Grand Valley Cemetery, Scout Lake, SK will take place at a later date.
