Scott Mahanes, 47, of Hanover, took his last ride on April 29, 2017. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Stephen Altorfer. Scott bravely served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of multiple deployments including Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Continuing Promise. Scott was a director for CSX Railroad with 24 years of service. Scott was a born leader, who selflessly gave his time to everyone he met. He lived his life loving, helping, giving and caring for all. He made the world a better place and his legacy will live on in every heart he has touched. He is survived by children, Anthony and Annalise Mahanes; parents, Dewey and Sherrie Mahanes and Terrie and Paige Webb; his love, Rebecca Mahanes and her boys, Chad and Markus; siblings, Stella Altorfer (Bill), Cynthia Mahanes, Timmy Mahanes (Megan), Kelli Roberts (Lee), April Hopkins (Chris), Ashby Webb, Andrew Webb (Sheri); and a host of extended family by birth and by choice. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 7, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory-Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2017, at Scotchtown Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 14573 Scotchtown Rd., Montpelier, Va. 23192. A graveside service will be held later that day at 2 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org. Online condolences may be registered at nelsenashland.com.
