She was born on September 16, 1938 to Vern and Dorothy Erickson in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended school in Salt Lake City and graduated from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1959. Throughout her career she worked in many areas of nursing with Surgical Nursing as her favorite. Carla was a member of Radiant Chapter #12 Order of the Eastern Star in Salt Lake City, Utah and Iras Temple #40 Daughters of the Nile in Boise, Idaho.
Carla had many hobbies, and was an avid golfer and bowler. She knitted many blankets, sweaters and hats for family and friends. Knitting hats was her favorite, she started knitting and donating her creations to others. Her other hobbies included gardening, reading, and serving as a car hauler and pit crew for her son, Steven.
She met Jon Cozakos, at a Demolay/Jobs Daughter event at the age of 12 in the Lagoon Swimming Pool (Farmington, Utah). When Jon started working at the Ice Cream Counter at the Albertsons in Sugarhouse they were reunited. Carla was smitten when Jon became the box boy that would offer to carry groceries home for her family. They started dating in high school, stayed together while Jon served in the Navy and Carla finished nursing school and then married on August 12, 1959, the day after Carla’s college graduation. They brought three beautiful children into the world, Jonalee, Steven, and Dorothy and they remained a strong unit for 54 years until Jon passed in February of 2013. After his passing, Carla stood by her husband and continued to celebrate their marriage that lasted 65 years.
After Jon’s passing, Carla lived in a cottage community and started struggling with illness. She then moved in with her youngest daughter Dorothy, where they later moved to Arlington, Washington so she could be closer to Steve and Dorothy’s kids.
Jon and Carla always said, “Our family will always move as a united unit until college, etc”. They held strong to that and moved their family 20 times, the move to Arlington with Dorothy being Carla’s 22nd, and final destination.
