Leslie Evonia Tynan, a true inspiration, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024 at the remarkable age of 104, surrounded by love in her home in Arlington, Virginia. Born on May 3, 1920, in Florala, Florida, Leslie was the 11th of 12 children raised on a cotton and peanut farm, embracing a hardworking spirit that would shape her extraordinary journey.
At the age of 18, Leslie left her rural roots behind and ventured to New York City, where she pursued a vibrant career in fashion modeling. She became well-known as the first model for the iconic fashion designer, Anne Klein, and it was in this bustling city that she met her one true love, Walter R. Tynan. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and lots of yardwork. Evon and Walter shared two beloved children, Timothy and Tracy, who, along with their families, were the light of her life.
Evon leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for her son Timothy and his wife Carey; her daughter Tracy and her husband, Joe Croce; her adored grandchildren, Mark and Kelly, and Kelly's husband Charlie Blanchard; and her treasured great-grandson, little Augustus ("Gus"), whom Evon was overjoyed to meet.
To describe Evon in one word would be “amazing.” Not just because she graced this world for 104 years, but because of her boundless energy, her love in keeping a beautiful home, and a zest for life that touched everyone she met. She enjoyed a rewarding career at both Lord & Taylor and Garfinckels department stores, where her good taste and friendly service were greatly admired, and where she made many dear friends. Her outgoing nature, combined with her can-do attitude, left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
On Thursday November 7th, a memorial service to honor Leslie’s extraordinary life will be held at Murphy’s Funeral Home at 4510 Wilson Blvd in Arlington. Visitation is from 10:30-12:30. Immediately following will be a funeral service in their chapel and burial at Columbia Gardens. Family and friends are warmly invited to join to a reception at Evon’s home in Arlington after the service to celebrate Evon’s remarkable journey.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Evon throughout her long and joyful life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Goodwin House Hospice in Leslie’s memory, as a tribute to a life lived with grace, kindness, and enduring love.
Evon will be dearly missed and forever cherished. Her legacy of love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
