Mary was born in Alvarado, Texas, on October 23,1962 as the second of five children of Eldon and Janis Youngblood. Mary spent time in Mesquite and Dallas as a young child, but in 1972, the family moved to Waxahachie, Texas where Mary attended school from elementary through high school. At Waxahachie High School Mary played the flute and enjoyed flag corp. When Mary was only about 14, she attended a two week summer camp at Tres Rios, a YWCA camp in Glen Rose, Texas. Mary received the highest honor in the camp that summer for her friendship, kindness and skill in competition. She was loved and appreciated by all who knew her.
After high school, in 1982, Mary met Kenny who had moved from New York to Dallas. They married on May 12, 1984 in Irving, Texas. Then, they moved to Arlington, Texas and lived there very happily throughout Mary’s life. While married, Mary attended Beautician school and enjoyed cutting hair for several years, but Mary’s primary vocation for the last 30 years was helping her husband with their telecommunications business. This gave Mary and Ken the opportunity to spend their days working side by side all through the years. Mary loved supporting Ken in the business and she and Ken felt blessed to be able to be together every day.
Mary is best known for her devotion to family and friends and especially her love for Christ Jesus our Lord. Mary would never let a prayer request go unspoken. Mary would lift her voice in praise beseeching God’s help immediately for the need, giving hope and comfort right away to those sharing concerns. Mary’s walk with Jesus and her special gift of intercession enabled her bring a sense of peace to any situation.
Most of you who knew Mary, understood her lifelong struggle with schizophrenia. Diagnosed at the age of seventeen, the disease would eventually take her life. Although she did experience setbacks from time to time, with the help of her wonderful doctors, her father’s support for experimental drugs, and Ken’s unrelenting determination to get the very best care possible for Mary, she was able to live a full and healthy life for the last 40 years. This miracle enabled Mary’s lovingkindness and gentleness to overflow to everyone she knew. She was able to enjoy and support her family and friends as well as work and travel with Ken. Speaking of travel, among her many travels she often visited Hawaii which perhaps was her favorite place to visit. Mary also loved staying with family at South Padre, enjoyed cruising and once was able to make the journey to see the Pyramids of Egypt and sail the Red Sea.
