Whilst at Colleyville Middle School Joy discovered track and field athletics. where she focused on running the 100 metres, 200 metres and occasionally also ran the 400 metres races. This interest, in track and field, took her up to the 2019 National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, for High School students. which were held in Sacramento, California. Though a freshman, Joy was placed 5th in the 100 metres event and in that year was also ranked 8th in the country.
Following a string of injuries, which started in the year 2021, and which limited her participation in track and field, Joy began complaining of pains in May of 2022. The pains that Joy felt continued up until September of that year, when Joy began receiving treatment for renal medullary carcinoma.
