Dan was born in El Paso, Texas, to Jose and Alice Serna. Growing up in El Paso, he loved playing baseball and basketball while spending many afternoons and weekends competing in motocross. He maintained these interests into adulthood, where if he wasn’t “crunching numbers” at his CPA practice, you could find him at a Texas Rangers baseball game or riding his Harley.
Dan attended Texas Tech University where he received his BBA in accounting. It was on the ball field of Texas Tech where he met his soul mate, Susan, and they married in 1979, upon graduation. They settled in Arlington, Texas, where they started a family, having a son, Daniel, and daughter, Catherine. It was also in Arlington where, in 1987, Dan founded his CPA practice. Dan’s work ethic is unquestioned. With Susan along his side, he spent endless hours serving his clients, many of which became lifelong friends.
Dan loved Arlington and felt giving back to one’s community was important. He served on the Arlington City Council, while under the leadership of Mayor Richard Greene. During his life he also served on numerous boards and commissions, including: Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club of Arlington, Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Arlington Ethics Commission, Arlington Sports Development Authority, Tarrant County Crime Commission, Education Foundation, United Way, Tarrant County District Hospital Board, and THR Arlington Memorial. His gubernatorial appointments included, the Texas Public Finance Authority, the White House Conference on Small Business, and Texas Tech Board of Regents.
In addition to his strong work ethic and volunteerism, Dan was a family man. He cherished time with his wife and children and, in most recent years, his two grandsons. His eyes lit up when it was “Papa” time. Dan was an honorable and kind man who demonstrated these qualities in both his personal and business life. He will be deeply missed.
Dan is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan (Grace) Serna; Son, Daniel Joseph Serna and his wife Kasey (Courter) Serna; Daughter, Catherine (Serna) Horn and her husband Andy Horn; Grandsons, Lachlan Serna Horn and Ramsey Serna Horn; Sisters, Irene (Serna) Tomlinson, and her husband Bruce Tomlinson; Patricia Serna, and Cecilia Serna; Mother-In-Law, Catherine Grace.
The family would like to give special thanks to Sylvia Hanks RN, FNP-BC for her never-ending care, compassion, and friendship.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 2, from 6-8 p.m. with a brief prayer at 7, at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N Davis Dr., Arlington, TX, 76012. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 5819 W Pleasant Ridge Rd., Arlington, TX, 76016, on Saturday March 3, at noon, with burial to follow at Moore Memorial Gardens.
