Chiu Lun was born on February 28, 1929 in Hoi Ping, China. She died on November 27, 2015 after a long fight with lung disease and ovarian cancer.
Chiu Lun received her Doctorate of Dentistry in March of 1956 from Hwa –Nam Medical School in China and practiced dentistry until she moved to the United States in 1972 with her two daughters, Harina and Elisa.
Her name Lun in the Cantonese language has the same pronunciation as the word wheel, so her children often teased her and called her Super Wheel. Her full name, Chiu Lun means supra in relationships: order and coherence. Her brave and adventurous spirit was evident when she brought her two young daughters from communist China to Hong Kong in 1962 and again to the strange and foreign land of the United States in 1972. She was later joined by her husband, Kwok Tim, their son Derrick in 1979 after being separated for 17 years, and other family members in subsequent years.
During her years in Hong Kong, Chiu Lun had to work three jobs as a teacher at two different elementary schools and as a dentist in the evening and weekends, while her mother and grandmother cared for her children. She did this to support her two family households in both Hong Kong and communist China, for her husband was unable to work due to political reasons in China.
Due to the language barrier, she worked many hours a day in restaurants in Florida and Alabama instead of practicing dentistry. Through this hard work, she eventually acquired her own restaurant in Oklahoma City. She learned to speak English, endured many obstacles and worked very hard to provide for her extended family so that they had a chance at a better life in America. Her success in the restaurant business was an astonishing accomplishment for someone who had never cooked and often burned the pots when boiling water.
Chiu Lun had a very kind heart. She and her husband took in anyone who needed help without question. She is a true hero to all of us who knew her. Her unconditional love and sacrifice will always be remembered and she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Yik Chow, mother, Yiu Chun Tse, and brother, Sam Chau.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Kwok Tim Kan, son Derrick Kan and his wife, Jennifer Kan, of Bedford, TX, daughter Harina Kan Yoon and her husband, Justin Yoon, of Arlington, TX, and daughter Elisa Vong and her husband, Johhny Vong, also of Arlington, TX.
She is also survived by her brothers, Richard and Vincent and their spouses Sylvia and Wendy, sister Sau-Ling and her spouse, Sam, and sister-in-law, Sianny, and 8 grandchildren: Amanda Vong, Brandon Vong, Eric Kan, Melissa Yoon, Stephanie Kan, Jonathan Yoon, Joshua Vong, Jessica Vong, and 1 great granddaughter, Lacey Hayes.
She had recently renewed her faith in Jesus as her Savior. We pray that God will comfort and sooth her soul. Although terribly sad to lose her, we are comforted by the loving memories she left behind. May God give us the strength to carry on and may her soul rest in peace.
