Bhanmatty “Chan” Persaud (Ramsaroop) was born on February 28, 1941, in the Plantation of Albion, Corentyne, Guyana. Born to Balwantia and Pelia Ramsaroop, she was the fourth of seven siblings, growing up in Hamshire Village, Corentyne, alongside her brothers Harry, Beeto, Harold, Ronald and Boyee, and sister Phulo.
She attended Rose Hall Primary and Middle School but left school at the age of 12 to help at home. Rising early every day, she prepared meals for her brothers who worked in the sugarcane fields, in addition to helping her mother with other daily duties.
On August 22, 1957, at just 15 years old, she married Deonarine “Dadool” Persaud, her devoted husband of 68 years. Known as the most beautiful bride by friends and family, Chan adapted from plantation life to being a farmer's wife with grace and skill. Together, they had four children: Kenneth (who passed away in 2021), Dato, David, and Shanta. They worked tirelessly to build a life in Number 50 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Chan was truly a "Jill of all trades," she worked hard in everything from fishing to making coconut oil, cutting wood, and burning clay bricks, not to mention the endless fruit and vegetable crops on the farm all while seamlessly managing a bustling household and instilling the values of hard work, family and education onto her children.
Chan attended sewing school for two years and graduated as a talented seamstress, creating beautiful clothing for her family. She would sew her mother's, mother-in-law's, and children's clothes and school uniforms. She knew how to make the best-pleated skirts. Her skills extended to knitting fishing nets as well. She was not only a talented artisan but also a cherished friend and community member. Known for her dancing at weddings and parties, Chan was the heart of any gathering and a pillar of support for those in need. Her generosity knew no bounds, always ready to lend a hand or offer help to family, friends, and strangers alike. Many in the village in Guyana knew that they could come to her for anything.
An entrepreneur at heart, Chan successfully ran a retail business from her home, selling coconut oil and rice for many years. In the summer of 1996, she embarked on a new chapter by moving to America, where she continued her legacy of care and support.
She played a crucial role in raising her grandchildren, she helped Dato and Shanta with their children. There were times when she would be with the grandchildren Monday to Friday and only see her husband on the weekends to make sure the grandchildren were well taken care of. She took care of the grandchildren until they were old enough. But she did not stop there once the grandchildren were in middle and high school, she took on babysitting jobs in New York, spreading her love and care to many.
After over 20 wonderful years in New York living with her daughter Dato and her family, she relocated to Texas to live with her daughter Shanta, continuing to be the best grandmother and embracing her role with great-grandchildren Elijah, Ava and her fur granddog Milo.
Despite facing numerous health challenges over the years, Chan’s indomitable spirit and strength shone through. If there is one thing that we know about her is that she is a fighter. She always knew how to find the best in every situation on how to persevere. Amongst everything in this world her family was the center of her universe. She loved all of her children, daughter-in-law, sons-in-laws, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren very much.
