I was sad about the passing of him. He was such an amazing person, and his memories with family and friends will continue to bring comfort to all who knew him.

Jim Bruckman was an extremely considerate and compassionate person who was always willing to help anyone if he could contribute. I met him in 1971 when I joined Bankers Life and Casualty’s information technology department as an IBM computer programmer, then referred to as the computer data processing business unit.

Jim worked for the company prior to serving in the military and returned there after his service to our country in Vietnam. His mother had also worked there as well.

I had just relocated to the Chicago area and found an apartment in the suburb of Niles. Jim also lived in Niles at the time so he and Bernie began socializing with my wife, my 2 year old daughter and me. We began  car pooling together.

Jim was an excellent technician and was willing to mentor others, to my and many others benefit. He was also the leader of a group that developed many significant systems that supported the company’s entire  Human Resources and Payroll home office departments. Several years later he worked for the prestigious Abbott Labs corporation.

Jim and Bernie decided to pursue adoption of children who needed a loving and nurturing family structure. They asked my wife and I to provide a recommendation for them to initiate first the adoption of Tim and Jeremy, then subsequently Kimberly and Ashley.

In June of 2018, Jim recruited me to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 311 in Des Plaines. Veterans who served in a military branch during the Vietnam era are eligible to participate in the chapter meetings and events.

In closing, blessings to the honor represented by Jim and Bernie in living their life, raising their family and facilitating the friendship and help for so many people.

Rest in peace now Jim. You were a large part of the chapter and will be sorely missed for sure. To your family and everyone else you left behind, I want to extend my condolences  and these words of comfort, "This life is just a path back to the place where we all came from". We all must be patient until we're all together again.

I met Jim 14 and half years ago when we were adopting Sara. He was instrumental in forging what has become a wonderful relationship over the years with Kim. 

Always a kind word, he was so supportive from the beginning. I will always remember the email I got from him the first night we had Sara. Nothing but kindness. As he had experience with adoption already, he was a great role model as an adoptive parent. 

Kim and family, we mourn with you, but know he is in a better place with your Mom.  They will always be looking down and watching you all.  Give yourselves time to be sad, but know that this too shall pass, but your love for your Dad never will.
