I am saddened to hear of Betty's passing.i am on medical leave and just heard. I will miss her great sense of humor. Besides her witty personality she had a serious side and would look out for her friends. I found it very enduring that she had her own health conditions but still would be concerned for her friends. When I think of Mom, I think of encouragement, love of family, fun sense of humor, and a passionate desire to help people. Here are some of my random memories ... When I was young, I used to love to climb trees. One of our neighbors once scolded me, saying that I would fall out of the tree and break my neck. Mom came out, looked up the tree and said "don't worry, he'll be fine". She encouraged me to climb higher! And when I was on the ground she encouraged me to tumble and roll. When I was in sixth grade, I discovered I was pretty good at math. Mom loved it! She didn't say "math is hard" -- instead she said "math is fun", and really encouraged me. When people now tell me "math is my worst subject" I think of Mom, and what a positive influence she had on me. Mom always told me how proud she was of her kids, and that she loved to watch us have so much fun during family holidays. She once wrote an email saying: "I am so in awe of what a wonderful family we have. It's a good thing God made our hearts able to hold an infinite amount of love 'cause if He didn't, ours would have ruptured a long time ago!" And "I am so happy for my children, they all have such awesome life partners, what more could a Mom ask?" A little story Mom told me about an experience she had when she was young: The word vinegar always reminds me of when I was little. My Mom wanted me to go to the corner store for a quart of vinegar. I began to cry and my Mom asked what I was crying about. I sobbed out, "I can't say it!" "You can't say what?", asks my Mom. "I CAN'T SAY VIGENER!" I sobbed loudly. She wrote me a note! Problem that was huge to me easily solved by My Mom!

I always remembered Aunt Betty being "firm but fair" and I always respected her for that. I also remember her always sharing a smile and giving me the feeling I could count her if I needed it. I know she is in a better place right now, looking down on us with a smile.

My fondest memory of Betty was sharing in the wedding of her daughter Mary and my son Michael. We shared many good feelings about this marriage and the addition to each of our families. Betty and I also shared the profession of nursing and frequently shared our love of caretaking of others. I will miss her and pray for her family as I know they will greatly miss her

With seven children in the family, whose births were spread over a number of years, it would not surprise that my siblings and I have different memories of our mother. I wanted to share a memory that perhaps my younger siblings, and most certainly her grandchildren, may not be aware of. My mother was a gifted seamstress. I have vague recollections of excitedly standing in the kitchen of my childhood home and her holding brown tissue McCall pattern pieces up to me to gauge sizing as she set upon sewing a summer dress for me. Intermittently, I would have to try on the unfinished garment so she could pin this or that part to get a good fit. As much as I wanted the dress, this was not my favorite part. Because no matter how careful we were, I could still feel the straight pins scratching at my skin when I tried to slip the pinned garment on and off. My mother had one of those, what we would now call “vintage” sewing cabinets. The sewing machine hung upside down in the cabinet and you would rotate it up when you wanted to sew. As a child I was fascinated by this engineering magic. My mother learned to sew from her mother. In those days this was not unusual, as store bought clothes were considered an extravagance with the depression still imprinted on society’s collective psyche. My mother’s wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses were all homemade, a group project of my mother, grandmother and Aunt Pat. When I was a young child, my mother made herself a red wool winter coat. I remember it had really large interesting buttons. I can still see the coat in my mind’s eye hanging in the front closet. At the time, we had a painting above our sofa in the living room of a man and woman crossing a bridge together. You couldn’t see their faces, but the woman was wearing a red coat. I was of the age where the world appeared small and seemingly limited to only the people you knew and loved. Consequently, I always assumed it was my father and mother walking together, my mother in her red coat. The combination of having more children and the increased childcare responsibilities this brought along with the fact that store bought clothing became more affordable, my mother’s sewing days decreased. But she still would dust off that magical sewing machine that seemed to appear out of nowhere from the innards of her sewing cabinet, to make costumes for my many dance recitals.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Nagy. The Nagy family was our across the street neighbors. What great childhood memories I have. I took my mom to visit Mrs. Nagy at her assisted living July of 2017 and love these pictures, see attached. What a great visit that ...
