Ann M. Metzger

Ann M. Metzger, 87 of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Arlington Heights, Illinois was born November 15, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Estelle (Reis) McMahon and passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023. Ann was the beloved wife of the late Louis E. “Gene” Metzger; loving mother of Louis E. (Janet) Metzger III, Peter (Michelle) Metzger, Brian (Joanna) Metzger and Mary Kay (late Roger) Oakes; cherished grandmother of Louis, Vincent, Jack, Nick (Alexandra), Billy, Teddy, Sammy, Charlie, Tom (Kristen), Katie, Allie and the late Michael and the late Scott; great-grandmother of Annie; dear sister of the late Robert J. (late Mary) McMahon, late John A. (late Dorothea and late Grace) McMahon MD, late Eileen (late John) Littwin, late James (late Helen) McMahon, late Rev. Thomas McMahon CSV and the late Estelle (late Donald) Schaefer and fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will gather for a visitation that will be held Thursday, June 8th, 2023 from 8:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 831 North Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Interment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine, Illinois.

Ann was the youngest of the large, deeply faithful, McMahon family of Rogers Park. She was nicknamed “Black Diamonds” by her oldest brother, Bob, for her beautiful eyes. The McMahon home was famous for its frequent gatherings of family and friends. Always an abundance of good cheer, comfort food, piano playing and of course the singing. They were experts at creating their own fun.

Ann attended St. Margaret Mary Elementary, St. Scholastica High School and Barat College, where she formed so many cherished, life-long friendships. Ann and her college friends were always “The Barat Beauties”.

She married the love of her life, Lou “Gene” Metzger, in 1956. They raised their four children and forged deep friendships on the notoriously fun Talbot Street neighborhood of Arlington Heights. “Aunt Ann” truly loved each and every one of her children, their spouses, her scores of nieces and nephews, her grandchildren and her great granddaughter, Annie. Nothing made her happier than a spirited game of Spoons or Gin Rummy with her grandchildren.

St. James and its parishioners were also near and dear to Ann. She was a highly involved member for 55+ years – covering both Father Bill eras.

Ann enjoyed her final year and a half as a resident of The Gardens of St. Elizabeth in Denver, CO. She quickly established friendships with her fellow residents and the exceptional staff.

Ann had three distinct careers. The first as an involved, loving mother. The second as a top realtor in the NW suburbs. Her third career, which spanned her entire life, was that of a tireless volunteer. She was always there for those in need – friends, family and complete strangers.
