Marson Wayne Sykes, 83, passed away on September 4, 2024, in Raleigh, NC. Born on July 13, 1941, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, he was a son to the late Willie Sykes and Katharine Whitley Sykes. Marson's early education was completed at Weldon Elementary and Weldon High School, followed by higher studies at NC State University, where he honed the skills that would define his career.
Marson loved raising his two children with Bonnie and spending time with their grandchildren. He would help anyone with an idea/adventure/research, even if it was a waste of time. Marson had a unique sense of humor and thrived on sarcasm. In his spare time, you typically found him enjoying sports, especially
when his kids were playing. When the kids weren't around, he was typically listening to a wide range of music from the 50’s to the 70’s, researching family genealogy, and working in his garden.
Marson dedicated over 30 years to IBM as an Electrical Engineer and Computer Programmer. His career also included significant roles as a Lineman with Southern Railroad and Carolina Power & Light, and he served his community as a door-to-door postman in Weldon.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cary. Marson was a loving husband to Bonnie Weiss Sykes, a proud father to Melanie Sykes Cooke and Alan Wayne Sykes and a cherished grandfather to Annie Katharine Cooke, Iris Elizabeth Cooke, Andrew Bennett Keeley, and Sean Michael Keeley.
Marson was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle Willie Marson Whitley, and siblings Colleen Sykes Outland, Alice Sykes Porch, and Leroy Clifton Sykes. He leaves behind not only his immediate family but also countless beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss his presence deeply.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. Apex Funeral Home in Apex, NC, is assisting the family with arrangements. Marson's legacy of love, dedication, and service will be remembered by all who knew him.
