John Roger Sherman was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 20, 1931. His parents were Roger Augustus Sherman and Gloria Rodriguez Sherman. John grew up in a family who enjoyed the varied culture provided by friends native to Puerto Rico and to their many acquaintances from other countries and cultures. John lived there until he and his sister, Gloria Ann Sherman, were sent to Mt. Hermon and Northfield preparatory schools in Northfield, Massachusetts.
John leaves his wife of fifty-eight years, Priscilla (Pat) Jones Sherman, their children, Laura Ruth Quiles, her husband, Jose Quiles, Roger William Sherman and his beloved, Kathryn Smith, and Amy Sherman Sikorski, her husband, Henry (Hank) Sikorski and their two children Ryan Henry Sikorski and Anna Frances Sikorski. He also leaves his sister, Gloria Ann Sherman Jones and husband E. Vaughn Jones. Gloria Ann's children are Harry Smith, wife Linda, Kathleen Smith Clinton, husband Mitch Clinton, Gloria Smith Corey, husband DJ Corey, and Charles Bradford Smith, wife Mary.
John, had a longtime love of chemistry and graduated with a degree in Analytical Chemistry from Syracuse University. That followed his service in the United States Navy where he was trained for the medical corps and then worked in a hospital at USNAS, Patuxent River Maryland. John loved his career as an analytical chemist where he worked for many years at ASARCO. That was followed by continuing in his field at several smaller companies after ASARCO's research department moved to Utah. His wife declared that he never would have retired if she hadn't persuaded him to move out of state to their retirement home in North Carolina.
John's other great love, besides his family, was classical music. He sang with his rich baritone voice in numerous choral groups and church choirs throughout his life. The latest being the choir at First UMC in Cary and also the Heritage Pines Choral group, a community chorus where he lived. He enjoyed music in his home all day, every day.
