John Leo Riggs

John was born February 15, 1940 in Onslow County, NC to the late Leo Vincent Riggs and Ruby Johnson Riggs. He was a graduate of White Oak High School in Onslow County, NC and attended Chowan College and NC State University. John was employed with United Airlines, retiring with over 30 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and shared his appreciation for the outdoors with his children. In retirement, he loved traveling the United States, as he said “rambling”, with family and friends. John was a loving husband, son, father, brother and grandfather (known as Papa).

He was preceded in death by his brother, Benjamin Riggs.

John is survived by his wife of 53 Years, love of his life and center of his world, Winnie Elizabeth Lindsey Riggs; sons, Jimmy Woods of Sanford and Gerald Woods and his wife, Gayle of Cary; daughters, Karon Swayze of Apex and Sheila Hearn and her husband, Mark of Apex; sister, Kaye White and her husband, Alex of New Bern; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

A funeral service will be held 2pm Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502, with burial to follow at Apex Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-2pm prior to the service.
