SCPO John W. Barnes, US Navy (Ret)

SCPO John Wayne Barnes, US Navy (Retired), age 80, passed away in the comfort of his home on December 15, 2024 in Apex, NC. Born on July 26, 1944 in Johnston County, NC; he was the son of the late Melvin Gray Barnes and Lila Smith Barnes.

John went to school in Lucama NC where he created lasting friendships and was still in touch with members of his graduating class of 1963. After graduation, John enlisted in the Navy where he served 26 years until his retirement as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1989.

John was a 50 year member of the Masons and focused on the Shriner’s children's hospital and Duke Children's Hospital. In his spare time, John enjoyed golfing, fishing and attending the sporting events of his kids and grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Linda; daughters: Angela and Trudy; son-in-law: Chris and grandchildren: Ryan (Buddy), Brayden (Bubba) and Gabby (Doodle) and his little dog Candy.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 21, 2024 from 12 Noon until 1:30 pm at Apex Funeral Home. Remembrances will be shared beginning at 1:30 pm in the funeral home chapel, followed by Military Honors.
