Debra was born November 18, 1959 in Kingston, NY to the late John and Nilda Colon Mertes. She was a graduate of Kingston High School and worked as a bookkeeper for over 20 years. Debra was also owner of Nortex Electric Services Inc. She loved animals especially her puppies. Debra was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her brother, David Mertes.
Debra is survived by her husband of 23 years, Gary Ayers Whitehurst; daughters, Brooke Byrne and Jacqueline Whitehurst; son, Joel Christe; sister, Aileen Egan; brother, John Mertes; and grandchildren, Dylan, Leah and Chloe Byrne.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 10am Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St, Apex, NC 27502. Burial will follow the service at 3pm in Martin Memorial Gardens in Williamston, NC. The family will receive friends 6-8pm Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Apex Funeral Home.
