Rev. Charles Allen Overton, affectionately known as Rev. Allen, age 88, passed away at Avendelle Assisted Living in Cary following a brief illness. Born on October 21, 1936 in Apex, NC; he was the son of the late Aaron Overton and Grace Lawrence Overton.
Allen was born and raised in the Apex Hill area. While attending Apex High School, he met and married (for 63 years) the love of his life, Joanne. They were blessed with a son named Jeff. After attending Campbell College and NC State, Allen worked in the trust department at NC National Bank. Not long after, he felt God calling him into ministry and completed his Master in Divinity at South Eastern Seminary in Wake Forest.
The next 34 years Allen served as Pastor at Evergreen Baptist Church (Delway) for six years and then fourteen years each at Sandy Branch Baptist Church (Bear Creek) and Immanuel Baptist Church (Clinton). During this time, he was also actively involved in the ministry of the Baptist State Convention. After retirement, Allen enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities, annual family vacations, traveling, drinking coffee and spending time gardening.
Although a man of few words at times, Allen lived the example of a true follower of Christ through a quiet servant's heart.
Rev. Allen is survived by his son: Jeff (and Melinda) Overton, of Apex; grandchildren: Tiffany (and Zac) Hales, of Raleigh, Kyle Overton, of Fuquay-Varina; and great-grandson: Stout Hales, of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife: Nancy Joanne Overton; and sister: Ann Overton Lanier.
