He was born Happy Zachary Drew Nichols in Bemidji, Minnesota in 1973 to Julie and Stephan A Nichols.
His first couple years were spent north of Walker, MN and then he moved with his mother to Cosmos, MN where he lived until the age of 18 when the family moved to Brainerd, MN.
Julie Nichols married Randall Koehler in 1977 and Randy adopted Zack and his sister Melodee when Zack was about 5. Zack went to school in Cosmos, MN. He grew up attending the Cosmos United Methodist Church.
He talked in sentences when he was only 8 months old. He could put a US state puzzle together by himself when he was just 2 years old. He was extremely 'intelligent' (his word), in the 98th percentile when he was in first grade, and his teachers described him as very smart, a joy to have in class, artistic and very talented. He was active in sports, as well as in band and drama. After high school, he had several different types of jobs, including telemarketing and construction work, as well as tattooing for fun. He learned a lot about computers and was often helpful to those with tech problems.
Zack married Shawn Warnberg in 2003 at Oak St Chapel in Brainerd.
He was preceded in death by his biological father, his grandparents; Esther and Verne Fredin, Selma and Stanley Koehler, Jerome and Virginia Rich, as well as his godparents, Don and Norma Fredin.
He is survived by his parents, Julie and Randall Koehler of Brainerd, his sister Melodee of New Mexico, his brother Kristopher of Brainerd, and his half-brother and half-sister, Doug Nichols and Gina Gustafson, both of Arizona; two nieces, one nephew, one great-nephew and 4 great-nieces; and his once and intended wife, Shawn Warnberg, and their beloved pets, Max and Abby.
He will live on in their memories.
