Robert "Bobby" Joe Wigington

Funeral service for Mr. Robert “Bobby” J. Wigington, 80, of Anniston will be Thursday, 4pm, July 22, 2021 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Rev. Kent Maddox and Keith Raisanen will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 2pm until 4pm prior to the service.

Robert Wigington know by others as “Dr. Bob”, Bob, Bobby, and by one special person as “Pappy” passed away at UAB Hospital on July 17, 2021.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents Ermon and Sue Wigington, siblings, Billy Wigington and Louise Wigington.

Bob will be dearly missed, by his wife of 55 years, Anne; his son, Gary (Tammy) Wigington as well as his daughter Rhonda Fowler; siblings; Patsy Brewer (Tom), Ann Byers and Tommy Wigington. Bob had a grandson, Peyton that was the absolute apple of his eye. He was known as Pappy to Peyton, and they had a very special bond. Bob invested so much time and attention in his precious grandson. Before the pandemic, they played golf together every week. They recently won the Anniston Country Club Father/Son tournament along with Gary for a 3-generation win that included titles for both Father/Son. It was the first win for Peyton and the last for Bob, a memory that the family will treasure forever.

Bob graduated from Cherokee High School in Canton, GA in 1960. He then went on to join the Air Force, where he served for 4 years. Bob was a member of the US Army Reserve Unit until he was ordered active duty in 1991 in support of Desert Storm. He retired with the total of 20.5 years of service to his country. Bob then trained at UAB under John Kirklin in the first Physicians Assistant Program at the school. This great opportunity was something Bob remained grateful for the remainder of his days and loved having opportunities to share stories from this period of his life with anyone that had an interest to hear.

Bob was able to successfully couple this special training with his tremendous work ethic and positive demeanor to touch the lives of many people over the years that brought tremendous pride and joy to Bob. He was highly regarded by all who knew him within his profession. Bob retired in 2002 after 32 years as a surgeon’s assistant. Bob was a golfer in his spare time and instilled the love of the game into his son Gary. Gary went on to become an accomplished golfer and has won many tournaments over the years, which brought much pride and joy to Bob. Bob also enjoyed being involved with the family business in selling antiques. He and his wife Anne enjoyed going to auctions together.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
