A celebration of life for Mr. George Lamar Haynes will be held Sunday, November 27, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with Dr. Todd Stewart officiating. Family will receive friends beginning at 12 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at Anniston Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Haynes passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022 at the age of 78 at the Cleburne County Nursing Home with family by his side.
George was a life-long resident of Anniston, graduating from Walter Wellborn High School in 1963. He continued his education at Jacksonville State University, graduating with a B.S. in Music Education in 1969. He was also a member of Phi Mu Alpha. George began his career as the choral director at Saks High School. He later transitioned as a civil servant to Fort McClellan, AL, beginning with support of the Chemical School and ending his 25-year career as the Director of Information Management (DOIM) – the highest-ranking civilian designation – in conjunction with the Fort’s closure. George then returned to education, serving as a special education assistant and substitute teacher to both Calhoun County and Jacksonville City schools before officially retiring.
George was also a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Saks throughout the years, serving as a Deacon, choir member, Golden Jewels participant and Vacation Bible School volunteer.
Mr. Haynes is preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Frances Rosenthal Haynes, and his wife, Rosemary Ferragina Haynes.
He is survived by his sons, Brandon Corey Haynes and Preston Tyler Haynes (Jennifer) of Kimberly, AL; grandchildren, Ciara Kirk Turner (Casey), Abbey Reece Haynes, Chloe Elise Haynes and Paxton Cole Haynes; great-grandchildren, Corbin Turner and Anslee Rose Turner; sister, Betty Ann Harwell; nieces, Tara (Jim) Wagner, Tammy (Bryant) Hiskey and Tracy Haynie, all of Houston, TX.; Yolanda (Steve) Heiberger of Birmingham, AL, Paige (Bill) Bainbridge of Nashville, TN; nephews, Billy Daniels (Mary Ann) and Timothy Harwell; R.J. (Michelle) Ferragina and Randy Ferragina of Nashville, TN; Austin (Jess) Kennedy and Neal Kennedy of Vienna, VA, including numerous great nieces and nephews.
