A true Annapolitan and proud Hell Pointer, Shirley spent her childhood in downtown Annapolis, living in homes on Conduit Street, Market Street and King George Street. She loved her hometown. In February of 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, George A. Miller, Jr., a true Eastporter. Shirley moved across Spa Creek to Eastport before settling in a house George built for her in Cedar Park to raise their family. Shirley was Annapolis’ first majorette, a talent she proudly showed off at any prompting. She was a homemaker, ruled her kitchen like it was her job, made an award winning crab cake and was an avid volunteer with her children’s schools. She dedicated her life to her family. With George, she never missed a sporting event her family participated in, and would travel anywhere to cheer them on. Her favorite pastime was cruising Spa Creek, the Severn River, Cat Hole (Lake Ogleton), and the Chesapeake Bay on the boat her husband built, “The Shirley M”. Her ever-growing family of 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren brought her incredible joy and she loved sitting by the pool and creek-side watching them swim, fish, crab and enjoy the water as she had all of her life. She started the now famous Miller 4th of July Crab Feast, enjoyed by many friends, and happily passed it on to her children to continue the tradition. Family was the center of her life.
Shirley was a member of St. Anne’s Church and the Ladies of the Elks.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 72 years, George A. Miller, Jr.; her children; George A. Miller III (Kara), Pamela Miller McNallen (Mike) and Linda Miller Davis (Chuck), her 8 grandchildren; Megan Zweiback, Erin Kohler, Michael McNallen, Brianne McNallen, Kristin Bunnell, Eric Miller, Bryer Meekins Davis and Kaitlin Latonick, and her 13 great grandchildren, brother; Melvin Meekins (Noel), and her sister in law, Nancy Miller Stamates. She is preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Helen Meekins, her brother Thomas Meekins (Betty), and her sister-in-law, Joanne Miller Stamates.
Funeral arrangements are with John M. Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis. Visitation is set for Monday, September 20th from 1:00pm – 3:00pm with a service in the chapel and burial immediately following in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
