Mrs. Shirley Marks passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on February 7, 2020 at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton. Shirley was born in The Bronx (New York) on February 22, 1924, the daughter of the late Samuel and Lena Goldberg, both immigrants from Khotin, Bessarabia. She graduated from James Monroe High School in 1940 at the age of 16. On November 29, 1941, she married her childhood sweetheart, Milton Julius Marks, with whom she enjoyed 67 years of loving and devoted marriage before Milton’s passing in December 2008.
Having seen her husband return from World War II, supporting him through a successful battle with cancer, and raising two young children, Shirley returned to college, earning her degree in Education from Hunter College in New York City, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1960. She then taught for 21 years in the New York Public Schools system, first in The Bronx and then in Yonkers, retiring in 1980.
Shirley and Milton, along with a large contingent of their lifelong friends, retired from Westchester County, New York to Boynton Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed 30 joyful, active years. Shirley’s last four years were spent at the assisted living facility in Bayleigh Chase in Easton, Maryland, where she basked in the loving attention and frequent visits of her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughters.
Shirley was a voracious reader until her final hours, and was a woman of unique strength, wisdom, dignity, and resilience. An independent spirit ahead of her time and a progressive thinker, she will be remembered fondly for her vibrant, loving, and forceful personality, intellectual curiosity and loquaciousness, her sense of humor, a steadfast devotion to friends and family, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning and academic excellence.
She is survived by her daughter, Shari Streichler of Hartsdale, New York; 3 grandchildren, Dr. Laurie Reider Lewis (of Centreville, MD), Sasha Marks Blanchette and Joshua Marks (both of New Jersey); 5 great-grandchildren, Julia, Ronnie, and Bryan Blanchette, and Beatrice and Millie Lewis; and 1 great-great grandchild, Robbie McManus. In addition to her cherished parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Saul Goldberg, sister Gertrude Karlin, and her beloved son, Peter Marks.
A private funeral will be held at Cedar Park and Beth-El cemeteries in Paramus, New Jersey on February 10, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Education Trust-New York, the American Heart Association, or the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
