Mary "Betty" Storton

Mary “Betty” (Burns) Storton, age 88, died on January 1, 2022 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born on May 19, 1933 to Arthur and S. Lillian Burns. Betty was a lifelong resident of Annapolis and grew up in Eastport. After high school, Betty went to work for Anne Arundel County Board of Education as a school secretary. She worked her way up through the ranks and retired as a Workman’s Compensation Insurance Technician in 1994 after 42 years of service. As a young woman, Betty was an avid bowler on several leagues and always held a lifelong passion for travelling with family and friends, including annual trips to Ocean City, as well as longer adventures to Florida, Colorado, Texas, Hawaii, Nova Scotia, and Caribbean cruises. She married Albert Storton on May 17, 1980, and they enjoyed being members of the Elks and the Fleet Reserve Club along with “their crowd” of friends. Betty and Al were married more than 17 years until Al’s death in November 1997. Betty retired from the school system in 1994 after 42 years of service. Known as “the crafty lady”, Betty put her hands to many crafts including sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, painting in various forms, and in more recent years, creating custom designed greeting cards. She also enjoyed Bingo, Mar Jong, dinners, and fellowship with her friends at The Gardens of Annapolis.

Betty will be greatly missed by her family including her sisters, Pat (Burns) Weishaar and Adrienne (Burns,Kane) Driscoll; her stepdaughters Bonnie (Storton) Barrett and husband Scott, Pam (Storton) Hadaway and husband Ed; her nieces and nephews Brenda (Weishaar) Korich and husband Todd, Mary (Weishaar) Suplee and husband Andy, Gordon Kane and wife Joann, Ann (Weishaar) Howes and fiancé Mike Sweeney, Larry Kane and wife Cissy; six grandchildren, ten great nieces and nephews, and 4 great grandchildren. As Betty’s health needs increased in the last several years, her family members lovingly became her care team led by her niece Ann Howes.

Visitations will take place at John M. Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis on Wednesday, January 5th, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, followed by a funeral service at 10:30am on Thursday, January 6th. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty’s name can be made to these intentions close to her heart: Eastport United Methodist Church, Wounded Warrior Project, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
